The Watercolor Society annual show (November: the Blitzer Gallery http://rblitzergallery.com) will be limited to membership only. The approach is an historical perspective and showcase of membership
The reception for the show will be the First Friday of November. Instead of contributing finger food, please volunteer to contribute to the allotment for refreshments that will be handled by the Blitzer Gallery.
The Blitzer Gallery will hold 20% of sales. Pieces that are not for sale are acceptable and will be included in the exhibit.

$35 single painting entries with $25 second and third entries or a $100 ten foot space to show a body of work. (The number of paintings will be determined by the width size (see below.)
All pieces need to be framed and ready to hang. *(Please use white matting)
If your framing varies from this, please consult with Linda or Aimée.

anticipate any difficulty in covering hanging fees, please notify Aimée, Linda or Dale.
If cost of framing is also an issue, please ask for assistance through the Crit Group, we can likely come up with a solution.
For the ten foot spaces:
There should be a minimum of four inches between paintings. Large or full sheet paintings (30”x40”) you probably want to hang singly, but if they relate well to one another, stacking of two is possible. Smaller pieces may be stacked in other multiples particularly if they relate to one another. For instance, I have three 13”x13” pieces that I would stack in threes. Or I have a 17”x21” and a 14”x14” painting that relate well and I would stack them in two. Keep in mind that the walls are mostly ten feet high, some are eight, but we do not want the show to look crowded. We are not anticipating needing to use exact measurements, so if your layout goes over or under the estimated 10 ft. space, please do not stress over it.
- Stacking more than three is not advisable unless they are small and are a series. (We want this to look like a professional show.)
- What we need from you is an estimate of your entries: i.e. Please measure width x length.
- As we get closer to the show, you may want to switch out an intended painting. That will be fine as long as it is switched for one that is near in width.
For instance:
I want to hang seven paintings: 2 (20”x28”) stacked, 3 (13”x13””) stacked, 1 (24”x30”) and 1 (40”x30”) or (113” in width space)
or: I want to hang three full sized paintings two 40”x30” and one 30”x40” (122” in width space)
We anticipate hanging the show to the best advantage of both your paintings and the show as a whole. We think the positioning will be best served if the ten foot spaces are not isolated in regards to artist. Part of your ten foot space may appear as you enter, another part in a different section of the gallery.

Botanical Art in Watercolor- Intermediate –Maria Cecilia Freeman
This workshop is designed for those who have some acquaintance with botanical art or watercolor painting. Some drawing experience is a plus. We’ll take a practical, traditional approach to drawing and painting a botanical subject – from study to finished work, emphasizing both accuracy and artistic technique. We’ll review a process of observation, drawing, composing, color mixing, and techniques of watercolor brushwork particular to botanical art. You may bring a botanical subject of your choice (live plant material, not a photograph); or you may paint seasonal plant specimens that will be provided, chosen to offer some interesting challenges and beautiful possibilities. On view at the Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco Featuring approximately 45 artworks, Portraits and Other Likenesses will demonstrate how artists from the early 20th century to our own time have negotiated a vast array of European, African, and American visual-cultural forms to redefine what it means to make a portrait. On view in the newly renovated galleries at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), Portraits and Other Likenesses will feature paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos from SFMOMA, many of them recently acquired and on view for the first time as part of the collection. The exhibition situates key historical artworks by Romare Bearden, Sargent Johnson, Seydou Keita, and Wifredo Lam in dialogue with recent works by living artists including Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Dawoud Bey, Nick Cave, Mildred Howard, Glenn Ligon, Rodrigo Moya, Chris Ofili, Paula Santiago, Yinka Shonibare, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Jack Whitten, Fred Wilson, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, among others. The Monterey Museum of Art presents Lasting Impressions—Pedro de Lemos, the first exhibition that celebrates one of the region’s most important artists who championed diverse styles, methods, and materials during the American Arts and Crafts Movement in California. A renaissance man and ambitious designer at heart, Pedro Joseph de Lemos (1882-1954) was a preeminent printmaker who also excelled at painting, drawing, metal, leather, and cement work. Winning awards for his innovations in printmaking, his proficiency extended from wood engravings and color block prints to lithography and intaglio methods such as drypoint, mezzotints, soft ground etchings and aquatints—the last of which garnered an honorable mention in the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
Organized by the Monterey Museum of Art with guest curators Robert W. Edwards, Ph.D., and Julianne Burton-Carvajal, Ph.D. This exhibition includes prints, oil paintings, watercolor, drawings, calligraphy, leather work, pottery, cement work, and ephemera with an interactive educational space. The Museum is proud to provide a forum for such an accomplished artist whose historic and educational legacy has bridged the past with the present.

Si Chen Yuan (1911-1974) was one of the most celebrated post-war abstract painters in Monterey. He produced a variety of subjects from still lifes and landscapes, to figurative work. Yuan’s style combined post-Impressionist sensibilities with abstract techniques that employed swift brushstrokes, bold lines, and expressive patches of color. Born in Hangzhou, China (formerly Hangchow) near Shanghai, Yuan studied with Chinese artist Xu Beihong, a prestigious modernist who trained him in the French academic style of painting. Travelling to Europe and Mexico, Yuan came to Monterey in the 1950s and pursued painting for twenty-five years. Balancing Chinese aesthetic traditions with European and American ones, Yuan was attracted to Monterey for its natural beauty and rich artistic legacy. He admired artists Armin Hansen and William Ritschel, and their influences can be seen in his work. His oil paintings and watercolors garnered awards and exhibitions in San Francisco, Boston, and New York; and his artistic contributions continue to be recognized.

Ritschel (1864-1949), E. Charlton Fortune (1885-1969), Francis McComas (1875-1938), and M. Evelyn McCormick (1962-1948). Visit the galleries to discover old friends in a new light.
A complementary selection of early California landscapes by noted Monterey artists working in the early 20th century is also on view in the 2nd floor galleries at the Monterey Museum of Art—Pacific Street.
