Norma Olive Souza
September 25, 1919 – January 2, 2017
70 Year Resident of Santa Cruz
Norma Olive Souza died in her sleep Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at The Maple House II Assisted Living Center in Santa Cruz, California.
Norma was born in Carlton, Australia, Sept. 25, 1919, to Olive Myrtle Hughes. She graduated from the Melbourne School of Art. After graduation she worked as a fashion illustrator for the Melbourne Sun and for the Australian Navy’s Graphic Arts Department during WWII.
She met John Wilson Souza of Santa Cruz, a member of the US Merchant Marines, while he was stationed in Melbourne. They married in 1944 during WWII and moved to Santa Cruz in 1946. She remained in the area for the next 70 years. She was a member of the Twin Lakes Church for many years. She was a beloved member of the artistic community.
As a single parent for many years, Norma supported her family by tinting etchings and retouching negatives for local photographers. Her passion, however, was teaching watercolors. She became a well-known teacher, inspiring many budding artists. She specialized in wildlife and historic houses of Santa Cruz County. She lovingly taught watercolors and painted until she was 88.
She embraced life, generously giving to her family and community. Her wit and humor stayed with her to the end. She delighted in visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Norma is survived by her brother, Ian McFarlane (Joan) of Australia; daughters Beverly Olive (Rich) of Santa Cruz, Patricia Bryant of Kirkland, Washington, and Jennifer Morse (Ken) of Boulder Creek; grandchildren, Jon Bryant (Lisa), Kelly Wilbanks (Tré), Katie Bryant, and Julie Yearwood (Jake); and six great grandchildren with a seventh due in February.
The family would like to extend deep gratitude to the staff of Maple House II (who were like family to her) and to the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Santa Cruz for the kindness and compassion bestowed upon both Norma and Jennifer, her primary caregiver for the last seven years.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Norma Souza’s name can be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County: 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066. hospicesantacruz.org
