Membership News:
The 2016 SCWS Annual Meeting was held on Tuesday 23rd. of February. Thank you to all who attended. To those of you who couldn’t make it: We missed you.
Dale reports that SCWS finances look good.
*Shirley encourages more attendance at the plein air outings. Please contact her if you have an interest.
There was some discussion of future SCWS shows with concern on parking and accessibility to membership and support of the SCWS Art League.
At present we are committed to 2016 at the Robert Blitzer Gallery and have a verbal agreement to maintain this August scheduling. If there is further discussion, I think we need to be considering two years in advance, or possibly adding an alternate ‘membership show’ at the League (or elsewhere) and developing the Robert Blitzer Gallery site for membership showcasing and sales.
*The 2016 Watercolor Society Show will be held at the Robert Blitzer Gallery for the month of August. The reception will be the First Friday, Aug. 5.
The fees will be similar to last year’s show: $100 for approximately a ten foot space or $35 for single paintings. We encourage your entries to be for sale and do not require that they be recent works. Please commit to entries by June 30, 2016. All pieces need to be framed and ready to hang. *Please use white matting. If your framing varies from this, please consult with Linda or Aimée. The hanging committee will attempt to make the show cohesive if there is any variation.
The Society voted to contribute $100 to the Art League to support the Art League’s annual student show and $50 award for a student watercolor entry to be selected by the Critique Group.
Conversation at lunch included discussion that the Society needs more contributions to the Newsletter. If you are showing your work, taking a class, reading a book, visiting shows, have a useful suggestion or rumination, please send a description to Aimée to include in the Newsletter.
Paul mentioned that he is presently building a studio. I imagine there would be quite an interest in this topic. Anne, Nancy?
The Crit Group is encouraging the first and third Tuesday group painting to emphasize figure study by having more volunteer modeling during the sessions.
Framing was discussed. (Some brave souls are still doing their own framing.)
During the delivery/pick up for last November’s show, I became aware of commercial bubble bags. I promptly researched and purchased online: http://www.framedestination.com/bubble_bags/gallerypouch

Watercolor, Techniques & Fun – JoNeal BoicIt is true, possibly…that watercolor requires more knowledge of the paints than other media. However, I believe it’s a fallacy that it is the most difficult medium! Come and learn the basics with a seasoned teacher of 40 years (wow! am I really that old?). We will review color theory and how it applies to watercolor. You will practice the techniques of wet into wet, washes, glazing, creating hard and soft edges. You will learn the most important tools for watercolor and you will see for yourself that most errors are repairable. At the end you will have 3 or 4 small finished projects to mat and frame, not to mention and have had a whole lot of fun. Oh yes, I am ALL about painting and fun!! Bring a lunch. Offered: March 5 & 6, Time: 9:00 – 3:30, Fee: $160 / $140 Members. Level: Beginner. Instructor: Jo-Neal Boic: Jo-Neal comes to us with 40 years of teaching experience, more than 20 of them working for Santa Cruz City Schools. She began painting in watercolor 25 years ago, then returned to school so that she could teach painting and art at the secondary level. During that years leave she studied fresco painting and restoration, serigraphy and oils in Florence, Italy. Her first love will always be watercolor but recently she has been painting in oils, acrylics, pastels, as well as on silk, which she also marbles. |
Children’s Books: Visual Storytelling – Brian BowesChildren’s books are open to anyone, from amateurs who want to create a unique gift, aspiring artists who are full of hopes and dreams, and veteran professionals. There is no secret formula, but all things considered it is best for you to begin by being yourself and to learn by experience. This workshop aims to offer you such an experience. In this weekend workshop we will work with an existing story and be covering some basic process steps to creating children’s book illustrations. We will discuss idea generation, thumbnails, story beats, reading between the lines. The instructor will be sharing professional practices and examples of original artwork. This workshop is a good opportunity for people who have a sincere interest in illustrating children’s books. Have you ever wondered; how do those artists do it? Where do they start? What comes after? How do they know if they’ve got it right? Let’s find out together! Bring a bag lunch. Offered: April 2 & 3, 9am-3:30pm. Level: All. Fee: $160 / $140 Members. Instructor: Brian Bowes is a professional illustrator and an Open Studios artist who has a deep love for visual story-telling. A graduate from the California College of Arts and Crafts, he is currently enrolled in the Hartford University’s MFA in Illustration Low Residency program. A fun and engaging instructor, Brian has given private drawing lessons since 2006. He is an avid drawer and uses the language of comics for fun and personal journaling. About the work“To be true to nature one must abstract. Nature does not waste her forms. If you would know the clouds, then study the rocks.” Henrietta Shore (1880-1963)Henrietta Shore, Women of Oaxaca, 1910, Lithograph Gift of Ruth FraryThe natural beauty of the Central Coast inspired artist Henrietta Shore. The land and its inhabitants became her muse and the subject of many of her works. She built a collaborative friendship with photographer Edward Weston, who shared her love of nature. Together, they captured the contours of objects and landscapes in their own styles.Henrietta Shore created a series of murals about local industries with support from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Trilogy by Ranu Mukherjee through Aug. 14, Asian Art Museum, SanFrancisco
Where is the line between history and mythology?
In Extracted, artist Ranu Mukherjee eclipses the boundaries between the two, placing them in the same universe. Commissioned for the Asian Art Museum’s 50th anniversary, this new exhibition draws inspiration from California’s Gold Rush, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the ancient text The Classic of Mountain and Seas, and the museum’s own collection. Through colorful, collage-like video, textiles and works on paper, Mukherjee invites you into otherworldly landscapes inhabited by miners, a shape-shifting alligator, a Chinese goddess with a leopard tail and tiger teeth, and other fantastical beings. By adding video and artworks to Extracted, located within the museum’s Chinese galleries, Mukherjee will create an evolving experience that invites multiple visits. Through its countless layers — image over image, fact mingled with fiction — Extracted creates tension between history and myth.
