Show Opportunities:
A reminder: Our annual show at the Robert Blitzer Gallery is fast approaching:
Robert Blitzer Gallery running for the month of August. The reception will be the First Friday, Aug. 5.
Please send entry fees for the 2016 SCWS Annual Show to Dale. The fees will be similar to last year’s show: $100 for approximately a ten-foot space or $35 for single paintings. We encourage your entries to be for sale and do not require that they be recent works. Please commit to entries by June 30, 2016.
I would also like to have a list of entries by June 30. Please include titles, sizes and prices. Remember when you are pricing your pieces; the gallery holds 20% of the sales. All pieces need to be framed and ready to hang. *Please use white matting. If your framing varies from this, please consult with Linda or Aimée. The hanging committee will attempt to make the show cohesive if there is any variation.
We have added a feature to this year’s show that will include bins for matted works for sale. If you have a ten-foot space, you may also have bin space for ten matted pieces. We hope this will improve sales. Also I am now receiving images for the show that will appear on the postcard and in advertising (The Good Times). Please send images of pieces that will be on exhibit to waveland@cruzio.com.
For the ten foot spaces:
There should be a minimum of four inches between paintings. Large or full sheet paintings (30”x40”) you probably want to hang singly, but if they relate well to one another, stacking of two is possible. Smaller pieces may be stacked in other multiples particularly if they relate to one another. For instance, I have three 13”x13” pieces that I would stack in threes. Or I have a 17”x21” and a 14”x14” painting that relate well and I would stack them in two. Keep in mind that the walls are mostly ten feet high, some are eight, but we do not want the show to look crowded. We are not anticipating needing to use exact measurements, so if your layout goes over or under the estimated 10 ft. space, please do not stress over it.
▪ Stacking more than three is not advisable unless they are small and are a series. (This will be a professional show.)
For instance:
I want to hang seven paintings: 2 (20”x28”) stacked, 3 (13”x13””) stacked, 1 (24”x30”) and 1 (40”x30”) or (113” in width space)
Or: I want to hang three full sized paintings two 40”x30” and one 30”x 40” (122” in width space)
We anticipate hanging the show to the best advantage of both your paintings and the show as a whole. We think the positioning will be best served if the ten-foot spaces are not isolated in regards to artist. Part of your ten-foot space may appear as you enter, another part in a different section of the gallery.
For layout samples, please refer to SCWS June 2015 newsletter.
If you have any suggestions for the coming show, please send them to me at waveland@cruzio.com.

Northwest Watercolor Society Spring Workshop
Kathy Winters will be taking a much deserved break from running the popular Spring Paint Out on Samish Island this year and Jan Wurn will be filling in for her.
As those of you who have attended know, NWWS members and friends can spend a few days painting inside or outside of the buildings, networking, eating great meals cooked by the extraordinary staff and share techniques with their fellow artists on the church campgrounds overlooking spectacular views of Samish Bay, oyster beds and the San Juan Islands. It’s a truly renewing and restful experience.
The 16th Annual Spring Samish Paint Out will be held from dinner on Wednesday May 11th through breakfast on Sunday May 15th. No children or pets, please and no liquor is allowed on the premises. Both beginners and experienced painters are welcome and you do not have to be a member of the NWWS to attend.
If you want to attend, please fill out the registration form on the NWWS website (click to open) and mail it with your check to the address at the bottom of the form. The Spring camp fills up fast and there are artists waiting to register so please respond ASAP so that you don’t miss out! You may call Jan at 425-486-6781 or email her at Jwurn@Hotmail.com if you have any questions.
Lodging and all meals are included in the cost. There are two types of lodging, plus RV spaces are available. There are 16 newer rooms that have attached bathrooms shared by two rooms and there are individual cabins that require a short walk to bathrooms. If you would like one of the new rooms you need to register immediately since they fill up very fast.
There are enough cabins for everyone to have their own but several have four to six cots per cabin if you want to room with friends and many campers do. Each camper must provide pillows and all bedding. The standard cabins are basic- heat, lights and cots with mattresses.
Dress for the northwest- cool, misty, hot, sunny, Whatever! and bring enough paper and other supplies to last the weekend as there are no art stores nearby.
Full registration payment will be due on or before April 19th and checks should be made out to the “Northwest Watercolor Society” (or NWWS) and sent to my address. A deposit of $75.00 will hold your space, but you will have to act immediately.
Cancellations made within a week of the event may not be refundable if your cabin reservation cannot be filed at the last minute.
An email will be sent in early May to all registrants giving directions, a map to camp and other helpful information.
Looking forward to seeing you, Jan Wurn 9324 NE 176th Street Bothell, WA 98011-3619
