Interesting way how I ended up getting into the Beaverton Ats Mix. Long story short, I found out that I had been accepted as a participating artist at the Beaverton City Library’s Beaverton Arts Mix for 2016. I had only 24 hours to prepare for this event. I found out that my acceptance letter somehow got lost in cyberspace so I had assumed that I did not make the cut. It was a call from one of the organizers leaving a voicemail asking when I plan to bring my artwork for the upcoming show that threw me into action. The organizers were kind enough to extend the deadline for me allowing me enough time to get the two juried paintings framed. The works that were accepted are “Cherry Tree” and “Red Grass.”
If you are in the area, please pop in. I hope you can make it!

Santa Cruz Art League:
Botanical Art in Graphite, Watercolor and Colored Pencil Botanical art involves accuracy as well as artistic technique and creativity, but you don’t need to be a botanist, and artists at all levels are welcome. In this class we’ll follow a traditional approach to drawing and painting a botanical subject – from study to finished work. Some drawing experience is a plus. We’ll practice particular methods of applying graphite pencil, watercolor and colored pencil. Each of these media has its own beauty and appeal for artists. The plan will be to render plant subjects in each of the three media first, then to use whatever one or more media you choose in a unified composition. You’ll get plenty of individual attention as you work, to challenge and encourage you at your own level of skill. Plant material will be provided for each lesson, but you may bring botanical subjects of your choice (live plant material, not photographs) if you wish. Level: All, Offered:6 Mondays,Beginning: Oct. 24, 9:00 AM – noon, Fee: $155 / $135, Instructor: Maria Cecilia Freeman is a professional artist with 25 years of experience bridging scientific illustration and botanical fine art. Her award-winning drawings and paintings have appeared in solo and juried exhibitions across the U.S. and in Europe. You can see her work at her website: mcf-art.com.

At The Hunningtington Gardens in Los Angeles (Pasadena): “Gardens, Art, & Commerce in Chinese Woodblock Prints”: (You can view images online through The Huntington <publicinfo@huntington.org>:
This major international loan exhibition explores the art, craft, and cultural significance of Chinese woodblock prints made during their golden age, from the late 16th through the 19th century. Bringing together 48 of the best examples gathered from the National Library of China, Beijing; the Nanjing Library; the Shanghai Museum; and institutional and private collections in the United States, “Gardens, Art, and Commerce in Chinese Woodblock Prints” features delicate works with painterly textures and subtle colors depicting plants, birds, and other garden elements alongside monumental accounts of sprawling, architecturally elaborate “scholar’s gardens.” A highlight of the exhibition is The Huntington’s rare edition of the Ten Bamboo Studio Manual of Calligraphy and Painting (ca. 1633–1703), acquired in 2014, and on public view for the first time. The exhibition unites several interests at The Huntington, the home of one of the most extensive collections of early printed books in the nation, various collections of prints by European and American artists, and one of the largest and most authentic Chinese scholar’s gardens outside of China. It tells the story of how, during the late Ming (1368–1644) and early Qing (1644 to 1912) dynasties, consumer demand for the printed word and image increased as merchants and scholars sought to display their taste in drama, poetry, literature, and art. Gardens also were central to a cultured life, appearing frequently in woodblock prints. Several centers of printing around the lower Yangzi River delta grew in reputation during the last decades of the Ming dynasty, and a golden age of Chinese pictorial printing began. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog with curator essays.
